David Stewart's Hair Tips...

Is it time to cover up

Starting to notice a few grey hairs don’t panic there are lots of quick fix ideas plus more extensive solutions. Remember this could be your greatest opportunity for change. It could be a few high-lights or a full colour. Some of the points that I consider are, skin colour eye brow colour, eye colour, facial shape, percentage of grey, personality type, lifestyle and general maintenance. I think of it this way if you can look great and natural in balance without looking pretentious with that “Oh my god” response from your circle of friends then you have done well.

  Family, Friends and Hairstyles

Who is it that controls your image, your partner, children, friends, hairdresser or you? So often clients tell me the reason for keeping their hair long is because their partner loves it long. The same partner won’t help you do it to go out and then will complain when you are running late. Sometimes friends and family are just comfortable with you the way you are, but what about you! I believe that when you stop challenging and changing your image that you have given up. So don’t give up get involved with your image consultant who will help create the new you.

  When I was Blonde

Many of us start off life with blonde, red, brown or black hair and sometimes none at all. Whatever it may have been most of us will see some sort of change over time. Blondes will mostly become darker. Redheads start as vibrant and rich then slowly become paler. Dark colours mostly stay the same until we start to loose pigments as happens with all colours then comes the dreaded grey look.

  Should I Stay Blonde

Staying blonde is not a major problem. Given that your own natural colour is not becoming exceedingly dark. Think of black as level 1 and blonde as level 10. As a hairdresser I prefer to lighten only to maximum of four shades to leave hair in its best condition. There are other options blonde highlights and partial colour. Don’t forget mixing darker and lighter colours can look great without the problems of re-growth at the scalp level. There are just so many choices, so talk to your hairdresser, and don’t miss out.

  What Season are you?

Summer, Spring, Autumn or Winter. It is suggested that we all fit into one of these seasons and we need to dress accordingly. I think it is far more relevant to understand whether you are warm or cool. Knowing this you can talk with your hairdresser about colours that will help you look your balanced best. It's best to work on the necessary areas - be it hair, makeup or clothing (over a reasonable time frame so as not to become to uncomfortable with the changes). Please remember, most of us already have most of it right and it's only minor changes that are required. So don’t throw out everything in the wardrobe... have a colour consultation!

  Reading the Fashions

As fashion moves around in cycles, it is really great to talk to somebody that is in touch – hairdressers are at the cutting edge. I always attend the season forecasts to see what is coming our way. Although in our summer we are looking at Europe to see what we will be wearing in Autumn and Winter. The next time you look at those catwalk models wearing what seems to be hideous just take a breath because it’s our role as image consultants to make sure you can fit in. Street fashions are generally adaptations from the catwalk.

  Children's Haircuts

Oh no who is going to take my child for their first haircut? Where should I go?

Ask around starting with your own hairdresser some salons specialize in children’s hair and other do not. I have found that it works great when you next go to your hairdresser connect with them and your child together. Let the hairdresser run a comb or a brush through their hair and after a couple of visits the child accepts this as normal practice. Most times the child is sitting happily having their hair cut (Most times!)

Blow Dryers and Electrical Hair Stylers

There are so many types of products on the market. It becomes very confusing, ask your stylists, they can in most cases sell you what you need and it’s in their best interest to show you how to use it. Purchase quality products and any problems return to point of sale.
